Tokyo Metro haiku
(Adapted loosely from public safety messages and “manners posters” on the Tokyo Metro)
On the way are curves
that cause the train to tremble
hold on carefully
Mobile phones make noise
and should be in your pocket
cooperation
Sometimes accidents
are thwarted by sudden stops
we hang straps for this
Boarding comfortably
requires cooperation
please wait in your line
Trash is a nuisance
to the people around you
don’t leave it behind
No luggage on seats
don’t stretch your legs in the aisle
others need room too
Stand behind the line
don’t put your face in the way
trains are dangerous
Earbuds with music
can bother the passengers
don’t let the sound leak
It’s just one person
operating this train
don’t impede the door
To warn that doors close
a departure melody
make sure you have time
Be considerate
with carry-on roller bags
they hurt others’ feet
Risk depends on you
let’s reduce by your actions
don’t walk with your phone
It’s OK that you’re drunk
that’s no excuse for violence
don’t hit the train crew
