In Tokyo

the rainy season is short and timid
a half-dozen weeks of occasional showers
dotted here and there by a daylong soak.
Even typhoon Jangmi lost her swagger
amateur player in an outsized role.

Maybe the point is to drench the city
a sort of mise en place
for the brewing summer heat
soaring humidity feeding jirijiri
the notorious sizzling noontides
soon to arrive, too long to stay.
